Topic:
- Why there are different connectors for "Power supply" and "Logic supply" present by the EPOS4 (and IDX)?
- Which of the connectors (X1, X2) has to be supplied with a voltage?
Solution:
"EPOS4 Compact 24/1.5" or "EPOS4 Compact 50/5":
- Mixed X1/X2 "Power / Logic supply" connector
More powerful EPOS4 product types with separated X1 / X2:
- "+Vcc Power supply" connector X1
- "+Vc Logic supply" connector X2
Usage and meaning of "Power Supply" and "Logic Supply" connector:
- It is mandatory to supply a voltage to connector X1 "+Vcc / Power supply" to power up the power stage, i.e. to operate the motor.
- If there is no voltage supplied to "+Vcc / Power supply" (X1), the motor will not be able to work and you get an "Undervoltage error" (error code: 0x3220) if you try to "Enable" the power stage.
- If there is no voltage supplied to "+Vcc / Power supply" (X1), the motor will not be able to work and you get an "Undervoltage error" (error code: 0x3220) if you try to "Enable" the power stage.
- The "+Vc / Logic supply" (X2 resp. X1/3) is in use to power the processor and logic.
- The "+Vc Logic supply" is optional.
- If there in no supply voltage connected "+Vc / Logic supply" (X2 resp. X1/3), the EPOS4's processor and logic is automatically powered up by the "+Vcc / Power supply" (X1) too.
- It is possible to use the same power supply for "+Vcc Power Supply" and "+Vc Logic Supply" inputs. The "GND" of X1 has to be connected in any case. It is the common (internally connected) GND of all supply connections and other EPOS4 voltages.
Technical background:
The idea (and practical industrial usage) by these separate supply lines is that the voltage of the power stage and motor supplied by "+Vcc Power supply" (X1) can be cut in case of an emergency state (e.g. by a relay or switch). As long as the logic supply is still present at "+Vc Logic supply" (X2 or X1/3) the EPOS4 processor and the logic are active, i.e. bus communication and position data acquisition from incremental and absolute encoders is still possible. Only the operation of the motor is not possible without "+Vcc Power supply" (X1) because the necessary supply voltage is not available.
