- What meaning has the "Max. speed" specified by the motor's data sheet?
The Startup wizard of "ESCON Studio" and "EPOS Studio" demands for the configuration of a "Max. speed" value, e.g.
There is quite often just simply the "Max. speed" rating inserted which is provided by the motor data sheet. Actually this is almost ever the wrong value based on a more broad view of the complete drive-train.
The configuration of the "Max. speed" value configured by "ESCON Studio" or "EPOS Studio" should not(!) just be focused on the motor's "Max. speed" rating but also take other limitations into account, e.g. due to supply voltage, gear's "Max. input speed", or speed limitations due of the add-on mechanics.
Motor's "Max. speed" rating
The "Max. speed" specified by the motor's data sheet is based on the limitation due to the mechanical design of the motor (e.g. bearings or windings). The "Explanation of maxon terminology" present by the catalog states the following:
The "Max. speed" specified by the motor's data sheet should not be exceeded.
Max. motor speed depending on supply voltage
The maximum speed which can be reached in practice mainly depends on the supply voltage of the controller. It is often even not possible to reach the motor's specified "Max. speed" in case of a too low supply voltage.
The following simple calculation helps to estimate what maximum speed can be reached taking the supply voltage, motor's "Nominal speed" and "Nominal voltage", motor tolerances, and some reserve required by control into account:
Max. motor speed = 0.8 x Supply voltage x "Nominal speed" / "Nominal voltage"

Gear's "Max. input speed"
If there is a motor combination with a gearhead in use, the gear's "Max. input speed" specified by its data sheet might be a limiting factor too. The "Explanation of maxon terminology" present by the catalog states the following:
Additional mechanical or electrical limits?
It is not very common but still possible that there might be some speed limitation possible due to other components of the drive-train, e.g. due to ...
- ... peripheral mechanical components.
- ... sensor's with some "Max. speed" or "Max. pulse frequency" limit too.
Please check all the mentioned influencing factors concerning the configuration of the "Max. speed":
- Motor's "Max. speed" rating
- Max. speed due to the supply voltage in use
- Gear's "Max. input speed"
- Speed limits due to add-on mechanics or sensors
Finally the lowest resulting figure of all these influencing factors is the one which counts from the system view and which should be configured as "Max. speed" by the Startup wizard of "ESCON Studio" or "EPOS Studio".
